What is Caipirinha?

The Caipirinha is Brazil's national cocktail made by muddling lime and sugar with cachaça, Brazil's sugarcane spirit, with an ABV of approximately 24%.

Like its name meaning "little countryside girl" in Portuguese, it has a rustic yet intensely charming character.

Made with just three simple ingredients, the combination of lime's freshness and cachaça's unique flavor creates an unforgettable taste. It's an IBA official cocktail.

Caipirinha ABV

Caipirinha has an ABV of approximately 24%, placing it in the higher range for cocktails.

Cachaça (40%) at 60ml combined with lime and sugar creates roughly 24%.

Similar to Negroni (24%) and Sidecar (24%), nearly equal to Margarita (25%). Lime's acidity and sugar's sweetness smoothly mask the high ABV.

Caipirinha Ingredients

Cachaça
Lime juice
Sugar

Caipirinha Recipe

  1. Cut the lime into 8 wedges and place in a rocks glass.
  2. Add sugar and muddle the lime to extract juice and oils.
  3. Add cachaça and stir gently.
  4. Fill with crushed ice and stir well.

Don't muddle too hard or you'll extract bitter flavors from the pith.

Caipirinha Taste

Caipirinha opens with lime's intense acidity and bittersweet citrus oil notes from the peel.

Cachaça's characteristic grassy, earthy notes from sugarcane with slightly funky nuances then spread, while sugar's sweetness wraps everything smoothly. Fresh yet bold flavors are distinctive.

Recommended for those who enjoy sweet-sour strong cocktails, or wanting to experience something different from rum.

Caipirinha History

The Caipirinha's exact origin is unclear, but it's believed to have emerged in rural São Paulo, Brazil in the 19th century. One theory suggests it evolved from a folk remedy during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, mixing cachaça, lime, honey, and garlic.

"Caipirinha" derives from Portuguese "caipira," meaning "countryside person" or "hillbilly." The diminutive suffix "-inha" creates an affectionate term meaning "little country girl."

In 2003, the Brazilian government officially designated the Caipirinha as Brazil's national cocktail. Legally, only drinks made with cachaça can be called Caipirinha.
