The precursor to the Negroni, it was born in 1860s Italy.
The harmony of bitter Campari and sweet vermouth with soda's effervescence makes it a perfect pre-dinner drink. It's an IBA official cocktail.

Americano History
The Americano was born in 1860s Milan, Italy at Gaspare Campari's café. Originally called "Milano-Torino," named for Campari from Milan and vermouth from Turin.
The name "Americano" reportedly came from American tourists visiting Italy who particularly enjoyed this cocktail. Another theory suggests Italian immigrants spread it to America during Prohibition.
In the 1920s at Café Casoni in Florence, Count Negroni requested gin be added to this cocktail, giving birth to the Negroni. The Americano is essentially the mother of the Negroni.
