What is Gin Fizz?

The Gin Fizz is a classic cocktail made by shaking dry gin with lemon juice and sugar syrup, then topping with soda water, with an ABV of approximately 10%.

A quintessential "Fizz" category cocktail born in 19th century America, characterized by refreshing carbonation.

Sweet and sour with effervescent lightness, it's an easy-drinking cocktail suitable for any occasion.

Gin Fizz ABV

Gin Fizz has an ABV of approximately 10%, placing it in the lower range for cocktails.

Dry gin (40%) at 45ml combined with lemon juice, sugar syrup, and 80ml soda water creates roughly 10%.

Similar to Gin and Tonic (10%), slightly stronger than Ramos Gin Fizz (6%). The carbonation's refreshment smoothly softens the alcohol.

Gin Fizz Recipe

  2. Fill with ice and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds.

  4. Top with cold soda water and stir gently.
  5. Garnish with a lemon slice.

Add soda water last and stir gently to preserve carbonation.

Gin Fizz Taste

Gin Fizz opens with soda's sharp effervescence and lemon's bright acidity.

Dry gin's juniper and botanical notes then emerge, while sugar syrup's sweetness balances the acidity. A light, refreshing finish is impressive.

Gin Fizz History

The Fizz is a cocktail category born in mid-19th century America. The name "Fizz" comes from the effervescent sound of the carbonation.

The Gin Fizz was first recorded in Jerry Thomas's famous bartender guide in 1887. It gained tremendous popularity as a morning pick-me-up drink in American bars.

The Fizz family has many variations. Adding egg white creates a "Silver Fizz," yolk makes a "Golden Fizz," and whole egg makes a "Royal Fizz." New Orleans' Ramos Gin Fizz, with cream and orange flower water, is another famous variation.
