What is Margarita?

The Margarita is a classic cocktail made with tequila, triple sec, and lime juice, with an ABV of approximately 25%.

Characterized by its salt-rimmed glass and sweet-sour flavor harmony, it's the most popular tequila cocktail in the world.

Born in Mexico in the 1940s, this iconic cocktail is recommended for anyone who loves the combination of refreshing lime and tequila.

Margarita ABV

The Margarita has an ABV of approximately 25%, placing it in the medium-high range for cocktails.

Tequila (40%) at 50ml and triple sec (40%) at 20ml combined with 15ml lime juice, plus dilution from shaking, creates roughly 25% alcohol content.

Much stronger than a Gin Tonic (10%) or Mojito (12%), and similar to a Negroni (24%). The salt rim softens the perception of alcohol strength, but it's actually quite strong.

Margarita Taste

The Margarita begins with the salt rim awakening your palate, followed by lime's bright acidity spreading across the mouth.

Mid-palate reveals tequila's distinctive agave character and triple sec's orange notes, with a sweet-sour yet clean finish.

Overall refreshing and well-balanced, beloved by both tequila newcomers and aficionados alike. Pairs exceptionally well with spicy Mexican cuisine.

Margarita History

The Margarita has multiple origin stories, but the most credible credits Carlos "Danny" Herrera, a Tijuana bartender who created it in 1948 for a customer who could only consume salt.

Another romantic theory attributes it to Husein Marquez in Ensenada, Mexico in 1941, created for his beloved Margarita Henkel.

It spread to the United States in the 1950s, gaining explosive popularity and becoming one of the world's most ordered cocktails today. Countless variations have emerged, including Frozen Margarita and Strawberry Margarita.
