What is Irish Coffee?
Irish Coffee was invented in the early 1940s at Foynes Airport (later Shannon) in Ireland to warm up shivering transatlantic passengers. Hot coffee, Irish whiskey, brown sugar, and a topping of lightly whipped cream come together to create a dessert-like indulgence.
Irish Coffee ABV
A gentle 7% ABV. The hot coffee dilutes the spirit and the cream caps it off, making the alcohol nearly imperceptible. A relaxed sipper to close out an evening.
Irish Coffee Ingredients
- 45ml - Irish Whiskey
- 120ml - Coffee
- 1tsp - Sugar
- 30ml - Heavy cream
Irish Coffee Recipe
- Add 1 teaspoon of brown sugar to a warmed Irish coffee glass.
- Pour in hot coffee to about 3/4 full and stir until the sugar fully dissolves.
- Add 45ml of Irish whiskey and stir gently.
- Slowly pour lightly whipped cream over the back of a spoon to create a smooth floating layer on top.
Do not whip the cream too stiff — a soft, just-thickened consistency lets it float properly on top of the coffee. Regular sugar can substitute for brown sugar if needed.
Irish Coffee Taste
Bittersweet coffee meets smooth Irish whiskey, with subtly sweet brown sugar and rich cream layered on top. The signature experience: cool cream first, then warm whiskey coffee underneath.
Irish Coffee History
Created in 1942 by chef Joe Sheridan at Foynes Airport (now Shannon) in Ireland, to warm cold transatlantic passengers. The recipe traveled to San Francisco's Buena Vista Cafe in 1952, where it became an American staple, and from there, a worldwide classic.
